Community Planner Job Description

General Overview: Located in Roanoke, Virginia, Hill Studio is a multi-disciplinary firm with disciplines in community planning, landscape architecture, architecture, and historic preservation. Our team is dedicated to creating sustainable places through asset-based design. Established in 1988 in Roanoke, Virginia, the firm has completed over 2,500 projects and won over 50 state and national awards for planning and design excellence.

Hill Studio is seeking a self-motivated, technology-savvy individual with strong interpersonal skills to join our team. This position is for a Community Planner with experience in planning, community engagement, and GIS preferred. Projects will primarily include comprehensive plans, strategic plans, master plans, downtown and redevelopment planning, and and feasibility studies for a variety of communities in the region. 

This position is located in Roanoke, Virginia. Remote work on certain days is acceptable.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Lead and participate in public engagement efforts – both virtual and in person

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Interface with clients

  • Prepare maps and final reports for projects

  • Some travel

Required Qualifications:

  • At a minimum, a four (4) year Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Urban, Environmental and/or Regional planning or a closely related field

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of community planning, general types of planning projects, and zoning

  • Skill in preparing and making public presentations

  • Skill in planning and organizing work to meet project deadlines

  • Ability to communicate complex information effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of people

  • Be a team player that is interested in working in a small office setting

  • Ability to transition between multiple projects and tasks

  • High degree of professionalism

  • Ability to balance multiple projects at a time

Preferences:

  • 1-3 years of experience

  • Certified GIS Professional (GISP) or ability to obtain within one year

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.)

  • Experience with or willingness to learn Qualtrics

  • Experience with or willingness to learn Mentimeter

  • Experience with or willingness to learn Claritas

  • Drone pilot’s license

Salary Range:

$46,000 - $53,000 DOQ
