Senior Planner Job Description

General Overview: Located in Roanoke, Virginia, Hill Studio is a multi-disciplinary firm with disciplines in community planning, landscape architecture, architecture, and historic preservation. Our team is dedicated to creating sustainable places through asset-based design. Established in 1988 in Roanoke, Virginia, the firm has completed over 2,500 projects and won over 50 state and national awards for planning and design excellence.

Hill Studio is seeking an experienced, highly motivated individual with strong leadership and project management skills to join our team as a Senior Planner. This position requires expertise in community planning, public engagement, and GIS, with the ability to oversee complex planning projects from inception to completion. The Senior Planner will lead and participate collaboratively on multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior staff, and cultivate strong, lasting client relationships.

This position is located in Roanoke, Virginia. Hybrid work options are available.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Lead public engagement efforts, both virtual and in person, including facilitation of public meetings and stakeholder workshops

  • Manage and oversee planning projects, ensuring timely completion and high-quality deliverables

  • Develop and maintain client relationships, serving as a primary point of contact

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior planning staff

  • Prepare detailed maps, reports, and planning documents.

  • Conduct research and analysis to support comprehensive plans, strategic plans, and master plans.

  • Research specialty preferred, such as housing, environmental or economics

  • Present findings and recommendations to clients, elected officials, and community groups

  • Travel as needed for project-related work

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a four (4) year bachelor’s degree in Urban, Environmental, and/or Regional Planning or a closely related field (Master’s degree preferred)

  • A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in planning, community development, or a related field

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Advanced knowledge of planning principles, zoning regulations, and urban design concepts

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience delivering public presentations

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment

  • Experience coordinating with public agencies, municipalities, and private sector clients

  • High degree of professionalism and ability to balance competing priorities

Preferences:

  • Master’s degree in Urban, Environmental, and/or Regional Planning or a closely related field

  • AICP certification preferred

  • Certified GIS Professional (GISP) or equivalent experience

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.)

Salary Range:

$60,000 - $85,000 DOQ
